Introduction of Poet

Faiz Ahmad Faiz (Urdu: فیض احمد فیض; February 13, 1911 – November 20, 1984) MBE, NI, was an influential left-wing intellectual, revolutionary poet, and one of the most famous poets of the Urdu language from Pakistan. A rising figure and notable member of the Progressive Writers' Movement (PWM), Faiz was an avowed Marxist and was a recipient of Lenin Peace Prize by the Soviet Union in 1962. Despite being repeatedly accused of atheism by the political and military establishment, Faiz's poetry suggested his complicated relationship with religion in general and Islam in particular. He was, nevertheless, inspired by South Asia's Sufi traditions.

Faiz was controversially named and linked by Prime minister Liaquat Ali Khan's government for hatching the conspiracy (see Rawalpindi conspiracy case) against Ali Khan's government, being Plot's central leader which was supported by left-wing military sponsor Major-General Akbar Khan. Having been arrested by Military police, Faiz among with others received a maximum sentence by JAG branch, although his sentence was commuted after the assassination Liaquat Ali Khan in 1951.

chand roz aur meri jan faqat chand hi roz
zulm k chanw main dam lene par majbur hain ham
ik zara aur sitam sah len tarap len ro len
apne ajdad ki miras hai mazur hain ham
jism par qaid hai jazbat pe zanjire hai
fikr mahbus hai guftar pe taziren hain
aur apni himmat hai k ham phir bhi jiye jate hain
zindagi kya kisi muflis k qaba hai
jis main har ghari dard k paiband lage jate hain
lekin ab zulm k miyad k din thore hain
ik zara sabr k fariyad k thore hain
arsa-e-dahar k jhulsi hui wirani main

ham ko rahna hai par yun hi to nahin rahna hai
ajnabi hathon ka benam garan-bar sitam

aj sahna hai hamesha to nahin sahna hai
ye teri husn se lipti hui alam ki gard

apni do roza jawani ki shikaston ka shumar
chandani raton ka bekar dahakta hua dard

dil k besud tarap jism ki mayus pukar
chand roz aur meri jan faqat chand hi roz

ab wahi harf-e-junun sab k zuban thahri hai
jo bhi chal nikli hai wo bat kahan thahri hai

aj tak shaikh k ikram main jo shay thi haram
ab wahi dushman-e-din rahat-e-jan thahri hai

hai khabar garm k phirta hai gurezan naseh
guftagu aj sar-e-ku-e-butan thahri hai

hai wahi ariz-e-laila wahi shirian ka dahan
nigah-e-shauq ghari bhar ko yahan thahri hai

wasl k shab thi to kis darja subak guzri hai
hijr k shab hai to kya sakht garan guzri hai

bikhri ek bar to hath ai kab mauj-e-shamim
dil se nikli hai to kab lab pe fugan thahri hai

dast-e-sayyad bhi ajiz hai kaf-e-gulchin bhi
bu-e-gul thahri na bul-bul k zaban thahri hai

ate ate yun hi dam bhar ko ruk hogi bahar
jate jate yun hi pal bhar ko khizan thahri hai

ham ne jo tarz-e-fugan k hai qafas main ijad
"Faiz" gulshan main wo tarz-e-bayan thahri hai
