In defense of the Niqab

‘Live and let live,’ says one brother to the right.
‘I don’t agree with it!’ I hear claims of another type.
Both are only views of human beings, I must stress.
I don’t follow opinions; I look to Islam for how to dress.

Next you’d hear them saying niqab is not from Islam,
Are they forgetting how the prophet’s wives would dress now?
Have they considered niqabi’s, might want to emulate,
The most righteous of women to have walked the earth to date.

They say: ‘You gotta be strong girl, with your face held high.’
My face is held high alright, way above your sight.
Have you seen me walking at the mall; I stick out like a sore thumb,
And after that you tell me I don’t know confidence hun?

How about that chick with shorts hanging to her hips,
I don’t hear you challenging her rights to live –
However she may please; no you only interrogate me.
Grilling about my ‘lack of contribution to society.’

Yes I’m a scientist and now I’m a mother too,
I topped my classes at university, it’s true.
A Stay-at-Home-Mom is what I now choose to be,
No my husband didn’t force me; I just can’t resist my cutey’s.

Then they claim the niqab limits me – it’s sick.
But I can be productive in anyway that I pick.
I’m more into raising my kids, anyhow;
Someone else can take my place at the lab for now.

And to my kids, no I ain’t teaching them to ‘hide.’
I’m teaching them their religion so they’d learn and take pride.
Seeing through actions, that the only matter worth it in this life;
Is to endeavor to please Allah, to Him we should strive.

Mention equality with men, yes I’m equal to any one.
Also believing equal doesn’t mean ‘just the same.’
Two people may get the same grade on a test,
But then they could’ve gotten different answers correct.

Oh, and I love it when people say you have to see my face;
To make sure that I’m no criminal – that’s such a disgrace!
What about that guy that did my car a hit and run?
I got to see his face alright, then he took off into the sun.

We’re in the 21st century now, as you say.
So why the discrimination, why all the hate?
Scrutinizing a small proportion of society,
When we don’t even put a dent in your creed.

I just want you to know I’m happy and free,
So if you’ll kindly quit bothering me.
When you tell me to lift my veil, I’ll never be dazed,
As Allah has commanded me to lower my gaze.

- UmAminah (Non-niqabi)
